Today while I was practicing I stumbled upon an idea for a free improv that was exclusively fast, short phrases. So that’s what I did today. I was hoping it would help me break into some new textures and ideas since it was very different than anything I’ve done recently, and I think it did. While I was playing this, it felt really organic to add in different articulations, (though not as many as there could have been), singing and playing, and whatever other odd sounds are in there. This was, again, some arbitrary rule that I gave myself, but I think it’s important, not only to give yourself a starting point, but also to make you explore sounds and music that you may not find ordinarily. It’s a way to get yourself unstuck if you feel like you’re in a bit of an improv rut.
